In Rudolf Steiner’s twelve-fold virtue cycle, March 21 – April 21 is the month of Devotion. This devotion matures into the Power of Sacrifice. This transformation is not sentimental—it’s initiatory. Devotion is the soul’s capacity to offer itself wholeheartedly to a higher purpose. Sacrifice is the spiritual act of releasing egoic will to serve the greater good. Together, they form a mystery path: the flame of devotion becomes the altar of sacrifice. This path aligns deeply with the archetype of Aries. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. Its ruler, Mars, is the planet of will, courage, and initiation. Jeffrey Wolf Green illustrates that Mars and Aries lead the edge of the soul’s conscious desires. This signifies the raw impulse to act, initiate, and evolve. They are deeply intertwined, forming the first archetype in the zodiacal wheel, and they mark the soul’s emergence into individuality.

Aries: The Birth of the “I”

Aries is the zodiacal gate of incarnation—where the spiritual “I” enters earthly life. It represents pure will, the impulse to act, to begin, to assert existence. In the soul calendar, Aries is linked to Michaelic courage—the strength to stand upright in the face of spiritual trial. But this force is dual—it can manifest as destructive aggression or as moral strength. In the force of will, Mars stimulates the etheric and astral bodies, energizing the human will. It gives the impulse to move, to strive, to overcome. In its higher expression of moral courage, Mars embodies the Michaelic force. It represents the courage to stand for truth. It is the courage to battle inner and outer darkness. As karmic activation, Mars awakens biographical turning points, often through conflict or crisis, pushing the soul toward transformation. Mars governs the threshold moments through initiation and trial, where the soul must choose between reaction and conscious evolution.

Mars: The Engine of Desire

Mars is the planetary ruler of Aries. It can be looked at as the conscious will in relation to the unconscious impulses of will of Pluto. Pluto represents the Soul’s dual desires. One is to separate. The other is to return to spiritual intentions. Mars is the conscious, subjective action of those desires.

Mars represents action and assertion – how the soul pursues what it wants.

Mars is the instinctual desire and felt impulse to move, fight, create, or protect. It is also the freedom to evolve. Mars must act freely to fulfill the soul’s evolutionary needs. Mars correlates with the subjective experience of desire—the felt sense of becoming. Together, Mars and Aries form the first evolutionary archetype. They are the soul’s entry point into incarnation, and they carry both the gift and challenge of individuation.

The flame of the soul is devotion to the inner fire that longs to unite with the divine. It’s the gesture of offering, giving oneself to a cause, a truth, a being. 

It is focus, aligning the will with higher intention, and it is reverence, recognizing the sacred in the mundane.

The soul must learn that true strength is not domination, but the willingness to sacrifice for truth. 

From Warrior to Initiate

The soul’s task is to evolve the Mars–Aries energy. It changes from instinct into intention. It transforms from impulse into integrity. Finally, it evolves from self into soul. The fiery devotion that begins as self-assertion is refined into conscious action in service of truth. True strength is not shown in domination. Mars in the Human Being

In anthroposophic physiology and psychology, Mars influences exist in

the blood and iron metabolism in the vitality, strength, and inner heat. In the liver and gallbladder, these are the organs of will and digestion. They are linked to temper and decision-making. In the temperament of the choleric—Mars energizes the choleric type. Individuals with this temperament are fiery, decisive, and prone to leadership or confrontation. These physiological expressions mirror the spiritual qualities Mars bestows.

Mars in Cosmic Evolution

In Steiner’s cosmology, Mars is part of the planetary evolution of humanity,

reflecting the post-Lemurian stage, where the human being began to develop individual will and autonomy. Our current evolutionary time is a school of moral (self-generated) courage. In this time, souls learn to act not from instinct, but from conscience. This process prepares the human being for the future Jupiter stage, where wisdom and love will reign.
