The moral fall and decline of the US is a potent and mythical subject. The Pluto return of the United States was exact in 2022 but is still unfolding, marking a once-in-a-nation transit, as Pluto completes its 248-year orbit and returns to the position it held on July 4, 1776. In evolutionary astrology and anthroposophic terms, this is not merely a transit—it’s a reckoning. A confrontation with the nation’s shadow, its buried karma, and the consequences of power misused.

Pluto’s archetypal themes are :

•  Death and rebirth

•  Power, control, and the underworld

•  Collective shadow and transformation through crisis

•  Power, control, and the underworld

•  Collective shadow and transformation through crisis

For the U.S., this return activated the natal Pluto in Capricorn (27°), a sign of institutional authority, empire, and material ambition. The founding impulse—freedom through structured rebellion—now faces its own decay.

The Moral Fall: Signs and Symptoms

In light of this transit, we are witnessing institutional breakdown and the erosion of trust in government, law, and media; economic disparity. Late-stage capitalism is revealing its exploitative underside, racial and historical reckoning the legacy of slavery, genocide, and imperialism is increasingly surfacing with renewed urgency, and global disillusionment. This isn’t just just political, it’s mythic. The myth of American exceptionalism is losing its grip abroad and at home. The U.S. is being asked: What have you built on the bones of the past? And more importantly: Can you die to your false self and be reborn in truth?

Anthroposophic Lens: Ahrimanic vs. Luciferic Forces

From Rudolf Steiner’s perspective, the Ahrimanic impulse manifests in technocracy, soulless bureaucracy, and materialism, while the Luciferic impulse appears in escapism, spiritual pride, and false light. These forces are both adversarial to each other and work in tandem.America’s fall may be seen as a descent into Ahrimanic control—surveillance, commodification, and the loss of soul in civic life. But the Luciferic temptation also looms: spiritual bypassing, denial of suffering, and the seduction of purity without process.

Redemption Through Crisis

Pluto doesn’t destroy for the sake of destruction. It purifies. The fall is not the end—it’s the composting of empire. What might emerge? A new civic myth rooted in humility, service, and ecological interdependence. A re-sacralization of law, where justice is not domination but restoration.A culture of remembrance, where the dead are honored and the living are accountable.

Of course this is not just America undergoing a Plutonic reckoning. The United States’ Pluto return may be the most visible due to its global influence, but Pluto’s transit through Capricorn (2008–2023) and now Aquarius (2023–2044) signals a collective transformation of civilization itself.

Global Pluto Themes: Collapse and Rebirth

Across the world, we’re witnessing institutional decay: Governments, corporations, and religious bodies facing crises of legitimacy. Revolutionary technology such as AI, biotech, and surveillance are reshaping power dynamics everywhere, echoing Pluto’s move into Aquarius. Mass migrations and ecological upheaval are results of Pluto as it exposes the consequences of long-ignored exploitation. Cultural polarization abounds as extremes of ideology, identity, and belief surfaces and buried tensions erupt.

This is the underworld journey of humanity. Pluto doesn’t just destroy—it reveals. It strips away illusions to expose the bones beneath our systems, myths, and identities.

Mythic Framing: Humanity at the Threshold

We might imagine this as a global descent into the labyrinth. Each nation carries its own Minotaur—its shadow, its unatoned legacy. The thread of redemption lies not in conquest, denial or the rewriting of history, but in remembrance, humility, and reweaving.

In anthroposophic terms, this is a test of whether humanity can spiritualize technology, humanize law, and sacralize the Earth. The Ahrimanic forces are strong—but so is the call to awaken.

What Might Be Emerging?

New myths of service and interdependence live. The growing terror and sadness is escalating, moving us beyond nationalism, blood and race as determiners of identity, and toward planetary stewardship.

Power is being decentralized. Communities are reclaiming agency from collapsing empires, both national and corporate. Soulful education and art are needed. Teaching not just facts, but discernment, empathy, and legacy. As Fred Rogers told us about his mother telling him as a boy questioning the evil in the world, to always look for the helpers, they are there. Evolutionarily speaking, there are always true forward moving individuals. Most of them are quietly working in their little corner of the world. There are also those in the forefront of the world stage, like Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg who are exemplary Michaelic souls facing the dragon.

The Pluto return of the United States is not just a national reckoning—it’s a mirror to a global transformation. As buried truths rise and old systems falter, humanity stands at a threshold between collapse and renewal. Whether through myth, education, or soul-centered service, the call is clear: to face the shadow, compost the legacy, and reimagine power as stewardship. The fall is not failure—it’s the beginning of deeper truth. The road to truth, beauty and goodness is obviously not easy and will be very painful for awhile yet.

Here are two verses by Rudolf Steiner that call to our higher selves to meet the call and challenges of this time we live in:

Verse for America

May our feeling penetrate into the center of our heart, and seek, in love, to unite itself with the human beings seeking the same goal, with the spirit beings who — bearing grace, strengthening us from realms of light and illuminating our love — are gazing down upon our earnest, heartfelt striving.   ~ Rudolf Steiner, 1923

 Verse for Our Time

“We must eradicate from the soul all fear and terror of what comes towards us out of the future. We must acquire serenity in all feelings and sensibilities concerning the future. We must look forward with absolute equanimity to all that may come, and we must think only that whatever comes is given to us by a world direction full of wisdom. It is part of what we must learn in this age, namely, to live out of pure trust, without any security in existence; trust in the ever-present help of the spiritual world. Truly nothing else will do if our courage is not to fail us. Let us discipline our will, and let us seek the awakening from within ourselves. .”                 ~ Rudolf Steiner
