Our Values and I-Making
When speaking of Venus and Saturn, the focus one usually finds is on love and restriction, self esteem and deprivation of some sort, pleasant and easy times, working hard, or the acquisition of money and one’s deprivation, or loss of it. Of course, there are other details, but something that is overlooked, is how complimentary their archetypes are.
Why is Venus connected to love, self esteem, and money? Why is Saturn related to restrictions, hardships, and hard knocks? These archetypes ultimately come down to the dynamics of discernment and definition.
Venus in us is all about discernment. Through her, we separate what is of worth from what is not. On the organic expressions within our physical bodies, Venus manifests in our kidneys, and our bodily cells in general, where what is discerned to be unnecessary to the well-being of our bodies is separated, then excreted. In our ears, all that enters as physical vibrations is filtered down to the “homeopathic” essence of tones, which carry the living elements of meaning, and have a connection to deeper cosmic truths. The ovaries and testes both have complementary elements of cosmic “listening” to the incarnating child, to build an appropriate body for its accompanying karmic necessities, gifts and intentions.
On a soul (emotional/mental) level, Venus has to do with the discernment of what is supportive to our well-being, and to what is in our best interests as an individual. This ranges from what feels good sensually, what is nurturing, and what is luxurious for our bodies and immediate surroundings, to what is nurturing for ourselves, in the light of living in the truth of our being, and in alignment with spiritual truths. It is through the Venus within that we can discern truth and falsity, and beauty and ugliness. What we choose to do with our discernment, then becomes our habits and character. It is only through this personal discernment that we can learn to truly love.
Saturn is the I-making principle (ahamkara) in connection to our discernment in life. In the willful defining of what we value and don’t value, we define our thinking, feeling, and actions, towards our definition of identity. This is at the crux of our evolution as individuals (the same process also Iives in all social groups). No matter what evolutionary state one is in, or whether or not one is resistant to evolution, these processes live. Their manifestations will differ according to their evolutionary state.
On the physical level, Saturn is expressed in our bones and teeth. That which is the hardest and most mineral are the most spiritual aspects of our body, and provide the foundation for our physical bodies. On the soul and spirit level, Saturn is the foundation and activity, which allows us to do our work and deal with our karma, here on earth.
Saturn is the Lord of Karma, because it carries the cosmic memory of what the human being truly is, and what it can become. This is the spiritual gaze that mirrors back to us whether our ways of being are in alignment with the spiritual intentions for the good of humanity, and what we ourselves have intended for ourselves in this light. Indeed, it is through free intention that we truly can love.
The bare-boned reality of the karmic necessities that we have to face is Saturn’s unwavering presence and gaze into our souls. Yes, it can be difficult. And yet, Saturn gives definition, form, and determination, as we move forward on our journey.
