Unconscious needs for security and their transformation are the roots of wisdom vs over-extension and overcompensation for what hasn’t been transformed.

Pluto going Retrograde on April 28, 2021 and Jupiter entering Pisces on May 13 made me think about how these two planets work together.

Let’s first look at the Greek mythological figures of Zeus and Hades, which are Jupiter and Pluto. These two brothers fought and defeated their father’s generation of gods, the Titans. After defeating the Titans, the two, along with another brother, Poseidon, assumed rulership of the cosmos. The three drew straws and Zeus won the rulership of the sky as supreme god, Hades ruled the underworld, and Poseidon ruled the solid earth and the sea.

Hades and Poseidon could not challenge the supreme god, even though Zeus was the youngest of the three, which caused some resentment. However, Zeus proved to be the most powerful of the three brothers. More importantly is that you have the rulers of the three realms of the cosmos. Hades is the eldest, and rules the underworld, the youngest, Zeus rules the upper sky realm, and The middle brother rules the middle realm of earth and sea.

The oldest, the underworld has different realms within it. This is reflected in the human psyche. There is all that comes from past lives, and that which is unconscious from this life, both living and dead. The extremely powerful Hades mainly stays in his realm, but when he suddenly comes to the surface, havoc seems to ensue, as he captures and controls, but it all ends up for the good, such as Persephone’s having to live in the underworld for half the year. This brings balance in the seasons of the year.

Zeus, at home in the sky realm, comes to the middle realm to cavort with women and other beings, often impregnating them, creating important and powerful heroes and other beings. These archetypes are very opposite to one another, yet one cannot exist without the other.

When seen as in retrograde motion, Pluto impels us to revisit all that we have thought, felt, and did, to keep us on track with our inner truth and soul intentions. All that we haven’t resolved or transformed will come up again. This will happen somewhat subtly—to the degree we have been working on ourselves, or with great drama and difficulty, as we deny and justify our resistance and avoidance of change. At the same time, whatever we have transformed in our lives will manifest inwardly/outwardly as strength, power, and riches, all reflecting our karmic necessities. These soul realities are behind whether, we experience time being a friend, or as something relentlessly oppressive.

These uprisings from the unconscious follow the timing of Pluto’s cycles, and are, of course, colored by the qualities of the other planets and their cycles. Though no one can experience a complete Pluto cycle in their lifetime; even its opposition to its natal position would mark an unusually long life for a person, one can pay attention to the different stages and key points of Pluto’s cycle that do exist during their life. History also bears witness to what manifests during complete cycles of Pluto.

For individuals, transiting Pluto will always be in a waxing phase to its natal position. This alone speaks of the human soul’s journey breaking away from the past towards its particular culmination of evolutionary transformation. Along its journey towards culmination, transiting Pluto makes different aspects to its natal position. Each one is a marker, with its own qualities and purposes, of subtle or difficult karmic junctures in a person’s life. The aspect will give indications as to the flavor of the unleashing of what is hidden and calls for attention. In its cycle, Pluto moves through each sign in approximately 21 years. A sign may be in one house, or across two houses, depending on house system and geographical latitude of the birth or event.

Jupiter is generally seen as beneficently expanding, or magnifying, and exaggerating wherever it is, and whatever it comes into contact with. It is also associated with wisdom. Within the human being, a very important aspect of Jupiter’s function is in the ability to come to wisdom. The wisdom we have accrued from past lives is inherently in us—with some deeply buried in our souls, only to emerge during an appropriate phase of life, and when triggered by aspects to itself, and by other planets.

Of course, we are capable of attaining wisdom during our lives on earth. These moments become beginnings of a Jupiter cycle, and will manifest differently at different junctures of that cycle, and when triggered by other transiting planetary aspects.

Pluto transits one sign, or one twelfth of its cycle, within two full Jupiter cycles. From a certain perspective, Pluto’s deepest evolutionary needs for security and transformation live within, and are the roots of Jupiterian wisdom that may arise, or over-extension and overcompensation for what hasn’t been transformed.

Generally speaking, to the degree we are not in denial and justifying ourselves, we have karmic experiences, through which we have pain, and we discover deeper realities about ourselves and the world. As we gain wisdom we become more authentic and our hearts and minds expand, and we become more beneficent.

Life is full of so-called messy karmic situations, so the manifestations of these planetary configurations will have a myriad of variations.Interestingly, as far as timing goes (though no coincidence), there is a couple who makes a good example. They made a joint investment when Pluto was nearly halfway into Capricorn. Seven years later, the couple split up. One now lives in Scotland, and the other in England. The contract is in the husband’s name, but the couple remain friends, and they have an agreement to split the dividends. All goes well for a few years, then the couple decides to sell their shares, which they did. The money came through as Jupiter went into Pisces, in the ex-wife’s second house. The bank transactions took a short while to clear, which allowed things to brew in each individual. Jupiter coming into the second house is definitely an indication of the money coming through. However things go deeper. The money is attached to some hidden things (Tr Jupiter in Pisces and Pluto in general/Tr Jupiter coming to waxing semi-square to Pluto’s position at time of investment). The reality of selling and exchanging the money triggered the man to project accusations coming from his ex-spouse, which led to confused communications.

Meanwhile, she felt guilty judging herself for not directly contributing to the investment. Luckily, they were both conscientious enough to talk through things with one another. He admitted that he had resentment over sharing the money, and she admitted that she felt guilty for not paying directly into their investment. This hadn’t been a problem for him, because he always thought her financial contributions to the family were in different forms, but had never expressed this. She realized she had kept her guilt a secret from him. The dishonesty led to exaggerated reactions at first. Once out in the open, they reaffirmed their appreciation of each other’s integrity and trust in each other. The financial situation brought out their karmic knot of not being honest with one another. A healing of that wound began, and they are both now wiser to be willing to bring honesty into their relationship, and into other relationships. The experience of getting back into alignment with ones soul intentions for oneself, and for one’s relationships, brings out the expansive Jupiterian soul experience of happiness.
