The Basis of Trust
The Lunar Nodes in Gemini and Sagittarius, squaring Neptune in Pisces bring a focus to the challenge of discerning truth from lies, what is true insight, from illusory fantasies. This is clearly being played out by the numbers of people who have been pulled into the vortex of various conspiracy theories that string unrelated phenomenon together, saturating them with connections and meanings, much like what happens in schizophrenia. Unlike an epiphany – a true intuition of the world’s interconnectedness – an apophany is a false realization.
Swiss psychologist, Peter Brugger introduced the term, apophenia, as a weakness of human cognition. He described it as “the pervasive tendency…to see order in random configurations”, an “unmotivated seeing of connections”, the experience of “delusion as revelation”, and as “the tendency to be overwhelmed by meaningful coincidences.”
This can also be fed by believing something is real, when it isn’t, based on misleading information. Which can be strengthened by our natural tendency for pattern-recognition. We are quite adept at perceiving conspiracies in random events; the face of Jesus on a piece of toast, or on a water-stained wall.
When there are false narratives bombarding social media, and everyone within a certain social circle are talking about the same propaganda, from a bubble of same-minded sources as though it is truth, the apophenia becomes a social reality.
The Lunar South Node is applying to Neptune, as the Lunar North Node is separating. The call for a movement forward is to bring cosmic inspirations into daily life, while what is of past habitual nature that does not serve our higher aspirations, is being called to be dissolved. How we respond to these dynamics is determined by our karmic tendencies, and our present state of mind.
Those without a certain degree of discernment will get sucked into a whirlpool of fantasies, which lead to a weakening of will. The promised false sense of unity dissipates into meaninglessness, leading to disassociation, even chaos and violence. For others, questions of trust arise. Can I trust in my own thinking? Can I surrender and trust in the spiritual world? Can I trust in the power of what is good, in the face of all the madness and hate?
